May 2026 | Location: Brooker, FL (Bradford County) | Completed by: Hunter Lipthrott & Jonathan Thiele, J&M Roofing’s St. Augustine branch
Sheryl’s roof had twenty years on it. No insurance event, no storm claim — just a system that had run its course and a homeowner who decided it was time. Hunter Lipthrott and Jonathan Thiele installed 22 squares of 26-gauge Galvalume metal panels over the existing roof on Sheryl’s brick ranch home in Bradford County, replacing a worn-out system with one built to last.

Twenty years is a full lifespan for a standard roofing system in North Florida — the heat cycles, humidity, and UV exposure take their toll, and by the end the system is doing its job on borrowed time. Sheryl didn’t wait for a failure. She made the call, paid for the replacement out of her own pocket, and got it done right.
She came in April 6. Hunter and Jonathan had the installation complete by May 20 — six weeks from contract to finished roof. On a rural Bradford County property like this one, surrounded by mature oaks and set well off the road, the job required a team that could work efficiently without cutting corners on a roof that will be out here doing its job for decades with no one checking on it.
Steel panel gauge runs counterintuitively: a lower number means thicker steel. 26-gauge is heavier than the 29-gauge panels common in residential applications — more rigid, more resistant to wind uplift, and less prone to oil-canning under thermal expansion cycles. For a home that’s going to carry this roof for the next 30 or 40 years without an insurance event to trigger a replacement, the extra thickness is the right investment. Sheryl paid out of pocket for this roof, which means she had every reason to choose the product that justifies the cost over time.
Galvalume’s aluminum-zinc coating gives the steel panel its corrosion resistance — the coating bonds to the substrate at the molecular level and holds up in Florida’s humid, salt-adjacent environment far longer than painted or bare steel would. The natural Galvalume finish is also highly reflective, which on a low 4/12 pitch roof in Bradford County means the panels are actively deflecting solar heat rather than absorbing it. Over a Florida summer, that matters.
On Sheryl’s red brick home with red shutters and a covered front porch, the white-silver Galvalume panels create a clean contrast that reads well from the road. The brick and the metal complement each other — two materials built for durability, both long-lived, both honest about what they are.
Hunter Lipthrott has more than eight years in residential roofing, certified across GAF, CertainTeed, and IKO product lines with NRCA Pro certification. Jonathan Thiele leads the St. Augustine team with more than seven years in the trade, certified across GAF, CertainTeed, IKO, GAF Metal, and Fortified construction standards, and previously licensed as a Florida 6-20 All Lines Adjuster. Together they handle both shingle and metal roofing installations throughout Northeast and North Central Florida, including the rural Bradford County market.
Sheryl’s Brooker home has a new 26-gauge Galvalume roof where a twenty-year-old system used to be. She made the investment herself, on her own timeline, without waiting for a storm or a leak to force the issue. The finished panels are clean and bright against the brick exterior, and the system underneath them is built for the kind of longevity that makes a paid-out-of-pocket replacement the right call in the long run.
